Male or Female Goldendoodle? How to Choose the Right Puppy for Your Family

“Should we get a boy or a girl?” is one of the first questions families ask us. This post covers the real differences between male and female Goldendoodles, the myths we hear most often, and what we think matters more than either.

The short version: the differences are smaller than most people expect, and the parents and the way a litter is raised shape your puppy far more than its sex does.

Size: a small gap, not a big one

Females are usually a little smaller than males from the same litter. In our program, Standards grow to roughly 40 to 70 pounds and Minis to roughly 20 to 35 pounds, with females landing toward the lower end of each range and males toward the upper end.

That gap is a few pounds, not a different dog. If size is the deciding factor for your home, choosing between our Mini Goldendoodles and our Standard Goldendoodles will make a much bigger difference than choosing a boy or a girl.

Temperament: what families tell us

Ask ten Goldendoodle owners and you'll hear the same generalizations. Boys are goofy, cuddly, and want to be wherever you are. Girls are a little more independent, mature a bit sooner, and can be more focused during training.

There's some truth in those patterns, but we've raised plenty of puppies that break them: clingy girls, laid-back boys, and everything in between. Personality varies more within one litter than it does between males and females as a group. Treat the stereotypes as a loose tendency, not a promise.

Training and house-training

Both sexes are smart, eager to please, and quick to learn. Some families find females focus a little faster in the early weeks, while males can stay in the silly puppy stage longer. Neither one is hard to train with short, consistent sessions.

House-training is about routine, not sex. Every puppy we raise starts on a litter-box potty-training foundation before it goes home, and a few weeks of steady routine in your house finishes the job for boys and girls alike.

Spaying, neutering, and other dogs at home

Once a Goldendoodle is spayed or neutered, most of the behavior differences people worry about, like marking or heat cycles, fade or disappear. When to do it is a conversation for your own vet, since the right timing depends on your puppy's size and health.

If you already have a dog, it's worth thinking about the match. Many trainers find opposite-sex pairs settle in most easily, though plenty of same-sex pairs get along beautifully. Your current dog's personality matters more than any rule of thumb.

What matters more than boy or girl

A puppy's temperament starts with its parents. Every one of our breeding dogs lives with the Purkey, Stinnett, or Gentry family as a pet, and you can meet our Goldendoodle parent dogs before you reserve. Calm, friendly parents are the best predictor of a calm, friendly puppy.

The first eight weeks shape the rest. Our puppies are raised inside our homes in Midland and Red Oak, near Dallas, with daily handling, kids, and household noise. You can read how we socialize puppies from birth to 8 weeks to see what that looks like day to day.

Our advice is to stay flexible if you can. A family set on one sex has fewer puppies to choose from in any given litter, and the puppy whose personality fits your home best might be the one you didn't expect. If having first choice matters to you, our Priority Picking Position upgrade gives you first choice of your preferred size and sex at our puppy picking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a male or female Goldendoodle better for a family with kids?

Neither sex is better with kids; temperament comes from the parents and early handling, not from being a boy or a girl. Both males and females from a well-raised litter make gentle, patient family dogs.

Are female Goldendoodles smaller than males?

Yes, female Goldendoodles are usually a little smaller than males from the same litter. The gap is a few pounds, so the size you pick (Mini or Standard) matters far more than the sex.

Are male Goldendoodles harder to house-train?

No, male Goldendoodles are not meaningfully harder to house-train than females. Consistency at home matters most, and our puppies go home with a litter-box potty-training foundation that gives either sex a head start.

When should I spay or neuter my Goldendoodle?

Ask your own veterinarian, because the right age depends on your puppy's size and health. Many vets now suggest waiting until a Goldendoodle is closer to full grown, especially for Standards.

Can I choose a male or female when I reserve a Purkey Puppies Goldendoodle?

Yes, you can tell us your preference when you reserve, and we will match you with a litter that fits it. Families who are open to either sex usually have more puppies to choose from on picking day.
